Tanda mo pa nun 1986?
Kasama kita nun sa Edsa People Power
Kuyom din ang palad mo nun,
Nangangalit at palaban.

Tanda mo pa ba nun 1986?
Kagaya rin ng iba pang dukha,
Biktima ng karahasan at inhustisya,
Naghangad tayong lumaya.

Tanda mo pa ba nun 1986?
ang mga sigaw natin ng paglaya?
Makibaka, huwag matakot!
Ibagsak ang pasistang diktadurya!

Tanda mo pa ba nun 1986?
Nandun din sila Cory, Enrile at dilawang iba pa
Sigaw nila’y Pagbabago sa bayan nating sinta,
Tangina!

PRESS RELEASE

January 28, 2014

Reference: Jacquiline Ruiz, CRC Executive Director, 913-9244

The Children’s Rehabilitation Center (CRC) was alarmed over the brutal and violent demolition of urban poor communities along Agham Road in Sitio San Roque, Quezon City by combined elements of the Philippine National Police, SWAT and paid goons last January 24.

“Based on initial reports from KADAMAY, an alliance of urban poor communities, more than one hundred fifty (150) families were driven out of their houses by an overwhelming number of demolition team and policemen. The residents appealed but the police did not heed to their pleas,” CRC Executive Director Jacquiline Ruiz said.

Violence erupted when members of the demolition team started to destroy the residents’ houses, amid the latter’s opposition and the failure of the police to present the demolition order. The residents formed a barricade in an attempt to stop the demolition and the police resorted to violence by using unnecessary force, guns and teargas.

“Data gathered indicates that numerous residents sustained bruises and minor injuries from the brutal dispersal. There were also residents, mostly children and the elderly, who were rushed to the hospital because of suffocation from tear gas. Thirteen (13) residents were arrested and detained to Camp Karingal, including two minors (2), Roberto Macaraig Jr., 16 years and Richard Chiong, 17,” Ruiz added.

Ruiz emphasized that this kind of violence against victims of demolitions always resulted to trauma, insecurity and uncertainty among children and their families, especially when perpetrators are persons of authority who are bound to protect and ensure their welfare. The incident clearly points out that policemen have not only destroyed hundreds of houses but also raised terror among residents, especially children.

Children interviewed after the data gathering of CRC and Salinlahi Alliance for Children’s Concerns expressed their feelings over the violent demolition. “We are very frightened when we saw the police destroying the houses, firing teargas and even aiming their guns toward our direction,” said a five (5) year old girl.

Residents continue to hold the barricades as another wave of demolition poses threat to their communities today. On the other hand, displaced families created makeshift tents on the roadside which serve as their temporary shelters while waiting for the government’s response to their demand of a decent and immediate relocation.

“As staunch advocates of children’s rights and welfare, we support the residents of Sitio San Roque on their fight to land and decent housing. We urge the government, both local and national, to temporarily halt the demolition and open the door for negotiation and consultation with the affected residents. We also demand the immediate release of the residents and minors illegally arrested and investigate the reported cases of brutality and violence during the demolition,” ended Ruiz.###

Last January 27, around 1200 combined elements of PNP, SWAT and hired demolition team brutally destroyed the houses of more than 200 families in the Sitio San Roque, Brgy. Pag-asa North Triangle, Quezon City.

Residents were very surprised when police brutally demolished their houses even the latter failed to present a demolition order. They expressed opposition against the demolition but to no avail as they were outnumbered and left helpless, watching their destroyed houses and smashed properties.

Policemen fired their guns and hit the residents with teargas. Many residents sustained injuries while others, mostly children, were brought to the hospital due to suffocation. Eleven individuals, 2 of whom are minors, were illegally arrested and detained. The demolition is a part of the Aquino’s Daang Matuwid that aims to displace thousands of urban poor communities for the benefit of big business and foreign capital.

Under BS Aquino’s Public-Private Partnership (PPP), urban poor communities in North Triangle will be converted into a Quezon City Central Business District- a project led by Ayala Corporation.
